What Hobby Do You Share?

My mother became suspicious when my father started disappearing every weekend for four hours at a time. He'd leave early in the morning and return around lunchtime.

Eventually, Mum confronted him.

"Where have you been all this time?!"

Dad grinned.

"Golf."

"Golf?!"

That wasn't quite the answer Mum was expecting. Knowing absolutely nothing about 'Golf', she demanded to know why it could possibly take four hours!

So Dad invited Mum along for a round.

Within weeks, Dad was pushing the trundler while Mum pushed the pram (with baby in it) around the golf course.

And so began 40 years of golfing together.

Along with collecting blue-and-white crockery in their later years, my parents shared countless memories of matches won and lost, birdies and eagles, holes-in-one (yes, plural!), balls hidden in the rough, and long conversations at the 19th.

There's something special about sharing a hobby with someone you love.

My husband and I spot birds on our daily walks. This is something I never imagined doing when I was single, until I met him. Nowadays, I can identify all manner of trills and tweets, and often spot birds in the distance that he can't quite make out.
